Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is in stable condition but remains “very serious” after surviving an assassination attempt that shocked the country and garnered global condemnation.
Fico, 59, was shot five times in the central town of Handlova on Wednesday. He underwent emergency surgery and is now stable, according to Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak.
“During the night, doctors managed to stabilise the patient’s condition,” Kalinak said on Thursday. “Unfortunately, the condition is still very serious as the injuries are complicated.”
A state security council meeting is scheduled for Thursday following the attack, in which the alleged 71-year-old attacker, a writer, was taken into custody.
Environment Minister Tomas Taraba reported that the operation went well, with one bullet passing through Fico’s stomach and another hitting a joint. The shooting was deemed “politically motivated” by Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok.
“This assassination attempt was politically motivated, and the perpetrator’s decision was made shortly after the presidential election,” Sutaj Estok said, referring to the election won by Fico’s ally, Peter Pellegrini in April.
Pellegrini described the attack as a threat to Slovak democracy, emphasizing the importance of expressing political opinions in polling stations rather than through violence.
Fico was initially taken to a hospital in Handlova before being transferred by helicopter to Banska Bystrica for urgent treatment. The attack was condemned by Fico’s European counterparts, with wishes for his full recovery.
The political landscape in Slovakia has been polarized in recent years, with Fico’s government facing criticism for its policies and actions. Despite these challenges, the country continues to navigate its path forward.
